Readers of this blog might recall that we have four, grown Black Labs. While there are dozens of stories about them found within these pages, I’ll share the very first post from July of 2010. Sunday Night, Dog Night.
Fast forward seven years and Maggie & Snickers are in their twilight years, both being fourteen years old and continuing to exceed their predicted shelf life. They lead a simple life, sleep, eat, poop, sleep and expect to get petted now and then. A doggie treat makes their day.
Big Red and Mackenzie will be seven years old soon, still have lots of energy and are content to chase tennis balls for as long as we are willing to throw them.
Several years ago, Big Red decided he should be the Alpha Male and negotiated with Snickers, using skills he learned by watching multiple re-runs of The Godfather with me. He muscled himself in and after putting a few hurtings on Snickers, he became the boss.
Until this week.
While Alicia and the girls spend a week in London, I am caring for our dogs along with Megan’s puppy, Martha.
Martha, a rescued Lab-Chow mix, is 3-4 months old and maybe 24 lbs. Big Rid is seven years old and probably close to 75 lbs.
Red is afraid of and avoids Martha. He will however get his hair up and snap at her if she is able to get close enough to him, Just a few minutes ago, she literally had him backed into a corner and he was shaking. (I wish I had my phone close by, it would have been the picture of the year). She just wants to play with anything that will play back, but he is still trying to sort things out and will likely benefit from talking to someone who understands. I found this for him and will connect them later.
