Call me cynical, but I would bet the answer to both is “no.”

I asked both my kids (age 20 and 21) and they both knew who she was. They think it was in middle school they read about her.
As for character and self-reliance… well, working at a public high school where I field calls from overly-protective parents, I’d say we’re fighting a uphill battle.

I learned about Helen Keller the first time in 2nd grade. Read the book written by her teacher later on and saw the movie, “The Miracle Worker” later on. She has been one of my greatest inspirations over my lifetime. I have no idea whether children are learning about her now or not, but if not, they should be. As to character development and self-reliance being taught in school–my answer is that I believe these things are “caught” rather than taught. Kids learn these things as they exemplified at home, and hopefully they are reinforced in school.
