A Perplexed, Digital Dinosaur

Blogging is a joyful hobby for me.  Some of you already know that the reason I blog is to amuse myself and to provide a view out my window.

Who needs a better reason?

I do like blogging, but I like blogging from the beach best.

I do like blogging, but I like blogging from the beach best.

That being said, I do occasionally enjoy looking at my stats page, gauging how amusing others may think it is.

This is where I become perplexed.  The other night when I looked, there were just a few short of 500 followers to my blog.  The next morning, quite by accident, I noticed I had over 1,650.  How is that possible?  WP keeps changing the admin page so I couldn’t find the page that used to list all the followers.

Every couple of days, I look at the daily stats that WordPress provides and it stays pretty constant.  But, I also send the blog out over Twitter, Linkedin, Tumbler and now, FB.  The statistics on the Linkedin page illustrate more people read the updates on Linkedin than the total showed on WP. (?) I also know that there are some folks (Thanks, Dan) that follow it via Twitter.  It just doesn’t make sense.

To top it off, every once in a while, I simply post that I’m trying to figure out how many people actually read the blog  by asking them to “like” the post so as to get an idea.  The result…less than a dozen likes from a pool of over 5,000 contacts.

OK, I guess I’ll  continue to amuse myself.

Now we have added FB because my current position at work contains a strong social media component.  I resisted for over a year, but finally capitulated.  Jelly set the page up and invited a few family members to be friends (keep in mind I still have no idea how this works), but the next morning, I have invitations from friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, former best friends, friends of my daughters, people I haven’t seen in decades and some that I  have never met in my life.  It’s just a little creepy.  (Please note: Thanks to all those that did so and I promise to begin sorting it all out soon…except for the creepy folks)

Maybe I’m not cut out for FB?

Did I just hear you say that you are on FB?

Did I just hear you say that you are on FB?

Regardless, I’ll keep blogging and since there are supposedly now over 1,100 new readers, I think I’ll post a “Throw-Back Thursday, best of” post with links to some of my favorite and most read posts.  (There are close to 2,800 to select from).

See ya back on Thursday and in the meantime, remember the words of the late, great Zig Ziglar. “If you can’t change the facts, you might as well change the attitude.

  2. yeah, WP counts, twitter followers, facebook friends and I think linked-in connections. So if you’ve had a jump in twitter or facebook, WP notices. My followers number varies by 5+/- every week as different marketing people follow me on twitter and then unfollow me days later. you know that bunch who thinks just because they followed me, I’ll follow back.
