I’ve seen it before and I’ll see it again
A couple just hanging on
Even though the words are no longer gentle
And the caresses no longer sincere
But the memories of what once was beautiful
And the fear of uncertainty of loneliness
Make them cling to each other
Long after goodbye would be appropriate

I wish people would seriously consider getting marriage counseling when things get like this. Many times the issues relate to being unable to understand one another on a deeper level than just surface communication and also recognizing that a marriage is about TWO people trying to work on issues in their relationship, not one person trying to change the other. Jim and I went through some serious marriage counseling over a period of a year when we were at the 7-year mark in our 20-year marriage. Both of us could do commercials for what that experience taught us about ourselves and helped us learn how to do for each other. He says now: “Married 20 years…best 13 years of our life!!” I agree.
