Contractions B Bad?

Starting off with a bit of grammatical irony.

Several months ago, I read an article wherein the author made mention that the use of contractions was sloppy writing.

The idea stuck with me and although I have not gone back and reviewed all my writings, I have consciously worked to keep any and all contractions out of my posts and letters. (I am sure someone will take the time to go back and list all the times I have failed to catch one).

It was my belief that Kurt Harden was the source of this obsession, but he cannot locate any reference to contractions on his blog.

I have become a little OCD about this and I was trying to recall who to thank for the added stress in my life.

The dreaded red pen

I did come across an article written by Lynn Gaertner-Johnston this afternoon which supports my efforts.

Don’t Use Contractions (more irony)

My style, whether for the blog, a business letter or magazine article, is to write like I talk. I am not as worried about conforming to rules as I am trying to convey a message in an informative and entertaining way.

Since y’all keep reading, I suppose I am doing OK.

(Sorry, Y’all is not a contraction in South Carolina)
